Paris Accord Response

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced creation of a Clean Climate Careers initiative following the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from the Paris Accord.

In his statement, the governor emphasized ongoing concern that the current president's choice to abdicate U.S. responsibility to address climate change comes at the expense of both the country's environment and its economy. He described the Clean Climate Careers program as a "groundbreaking investment, representing the largest state clean energy procurement in U.S. history." The initiative is a multi-pronged strategy to grow New York's emerging clean energy economy and prepare the workforce for long-term careers associated with the industry.

The new program will be conducted in partnership with the Industrial Labor Relations School's Worker Institute at Cornell University and Climate Jobs NY, with a focus on accelerating energy efficiency and renewable energy growth to make New York a magnet for new energy technologies. According to the governor, it may create 40,000 new, good-paying clean energy jobs by 2020. As part of the first phase of the program, New York State will make an investment of up to $1.5 billion in major renewable energy projects, including wind and solar, and also will significantly expand energy efficiency and solar installations at public buildings.

It is expected that the investment will result in an additional 2.5 million megawatt-hours of electricity a year, enough to supply around 350,000 homes.
